Discernment: Renewing the Mind

Lately, my life has been filled with distractions and disappointments.

I am not pointing fingers at anyone else. If anything, I have learned to first examine my own heart.

As I continue maturing in Christ, I realize how many lies I have believed throughout my life. The process of unlearning those lies is not instant. It is a slow and often painful journey of healing.

At times, you may feel discontent.

Discouraged.

Uncomfortable.

Even confused.

Those emotions are not enjoyable, but they often reveal areas where God is renewing our minds and replacing deception with truth.

We were never created to build our identity upon the lies of the enemy.

We were created to remain rooted in our identity as children of God.

As we grow in discernment, our perspective begins to change.

Distractions become opportunities to refocus on Christ.

Disappointments become divine appointments.

Discouragement gives way to courage because our confidence is no longer rooted in our circumstances—it is rooted in Jesus Christ.

Romans 12:2 reminds us:

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will."

That verse beautifully summarizes the Christian life.

God is continually transforming us by renewing the way we think.

Recently, I began reflecting on the prefix "dis-" because it appears in many words associated with spiritual struggle—distraction, disappointment, discouragement, and disobedience.

As I studied language and word origins, I was reminded of how powerful words truly are.

John 1:1 declares:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

Words matter.

They have the power to encourage or discourage.

To heal or to wound.

To build up or tear down.

That realization challenged me to become more intentional about the words I believe, the words I speak, and the words I allow others to speak over my life.

For much of my life, I unknowingly developed unhealthy thought patterns because I lacked biblical discernment.

I accepted ideas without testing them against Scripture.

I listened to voices without asking whether they reflected God's truth.

I followed influence without first seeking God's wisdom.

The Lord gently showed me that discernment is one of the greatest gifts He gives His people.

Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:21–22:

"Test everything. Hold on to what is good. Reject every kind of evil."

Those simple instructions have become a foundation for my spiritual growth.

Discernment is not suspicion.

It is spiritual wisdom.

It is the ability to recognize truth because we have become so familiar with God's voice through His Word.

As I reflect on my own journey, I realize that much of my confusion came from listening to false ideas rather than remaining firmly rooted in Scripture.

My prayer is that you learn to cultivate discernment instead of passivity.

Learn to test every teaching against God's Word.

Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you as you grow in wisdom.

Here are four practices that have helped strengthen my discernment:

1. Know the True Gospel

Galatians 1:6–9 reminds us to remain faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to reject any message that distorts His truth.

2. Study the Whole Counsel of God

Acts 20:27 reminds us of the importance of understanding the full message of Scripture rather than focusing only on isolated verses.

3. Compare Every Teaching with Scripture

The Bereans were commended in Acts 17:11 because they eagerly received the message while carefully examining the Scriptures every day to confirm that what they heard was true.

That should be our example as well.

4. Guard Yourself Against False Teaching

Romans 16:17 encourages believers to watch carefully for teachings that create division or lead people away from the truth of God's Word.

Discernment protects us from deception.

My hope is that you will learn from the mistakes I made rather than repeating them yourself.

You are not defined by the labels the world places on you.

You are not defined by the opinions of your parents, coaches, teachers, or critics.

You are first and foremost a child of God.

Your identity begins with your Creator.

Whenever confusion arises, take it to Him first.

Do not allow fear, shame, or negative words to become your identity.

Instead, guard your heart and your mind by remaining rooted in Christ.

As Philippians 4:7 promises:

"And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

That peace is available to every believer who chooses to trust Him.

May we continually renew our minds, strengthen our discernment, and walk confidently in the identity Christ has already given us.
