Remember Who You Are

As we continue to mature in Christ, every area of our lives begins to change. Our relationships shift. Our mindset changes. Our habits are transformed. That is the beauty of sanctification.

Part of my redemption journey was recognizing the many idols I had unknowingly placed before the one true God. The truth is that we all struggle with this in different ways. Whether it is pleasure, success, yoga, cannabis, approval, or comfort, we often give our flesh what only God deserves.

But when we truly decide to follow Jesus Christ, He begins the work of consecrating and sanctifying us. We become a new creation—not because of our own efforts, but because of His grace.

Following Christ is, in many ways, a personal resurrection. The old life dies, and a new life begins.

As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17:

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"

I am grateful for every season of my life because God has used each one to shape me. The old Briana lived, learned, and survived. But today, I am ready to become the woman God created me to be.

That is not easy to admit, but it is evidence of God's transforming work in my life.

As I reflected on my journey, I realized how deeply trust issues, trauma, and pride had influenced my thinking. My desire to control outcomes and rely on my own understanding often kept me from fully trusting God. Looking back, I can now recognize patterns of pride, unbelief, and self-reliance that needed to be surrendered to Christ.

Healing begins with honesty.

Whether through counseling, rehabilitation, discipleship, or personal reflection, true healing starts when we stop denying our condition and allow God to reveal the truth about our hearts.

Looking honestly in the mirror and telling your true story is not weakness—it is the beginning of freedom.

God is continually reminding us of who we really are.

I often think about the scene in The Lion King when Mufasa tells Simba, "Remember who you are."

That scene always reminds me of what our Heavenly Father continually whispers to His children.

Remember who you are.

Remember whose you are.

Remember your identity.

This year, I specifically asked God to reveal the covenant He has for my life.

As I continued reading Scripture, God repeatedly highlighted the importance of covenant throughout His Word. While reading the Ethiopian Bible—which includes books such as the Apocrypha, Enoch, and Jubilees—I became even more aware of God's faithfulness throughout history.

When I rededicated my life to Christ, was baptized, and committed to reading the entire Bible in one year, I made a covenant before the Lord. By His grace, I completed that commitment, and I now sense Him inviting me into a deeper understanding of His Word.

Like Daniel, I find myself increasingly amazed by the mysteries God reveals through Scripture.

Daniel 2:22 declares:

"He reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with Him."

As the Holy Spirit continues to teach me through His Word, I cannot help but feel as though I am remembering something that my soul always longed to know.

I am remembering who I truly am.

A daughter of God.

A child of the covenant.

By faith, an heir to the promises God made through Abraham.

As my identity has become rooted in Christ, my experiences have taken on new meaning. I now see life with new eyes, hear with new ears, and understand with renewed perspective.

Then God led me to Deuteronomy 8.

For me, this chapter became a beautiful reminder of reconciliation, redemption, and God's unwavering faithfulness. It reminded me that I have never been abandoned or forgotten. Even during seasons when I believed I was alone, God was faithfully leading me through the wilderness.

Deuteronomy 8 also reminded me of my calling.

To live in this world without becoming shaped by it.

To walk in obedience.

To be a light in darkness.

These are truths I have spoken over my life for years, yet I never fully understood them until I encountered this chapter in a fresh way.

Now I understand.

I am not discovering my identity.

I am remembering the identity that God has always called me to walk in.

I AM REMEMBERING MY TRUE IDENTITY.

Do Not Forget the Lord

Read Deuteronomy 8:1–20 here in its entirety.

Every time I return to this chapter, I am reminded that God's blessings were never meant to produce pride. They were meant to produce gratitude.

The wilderness was never punishment.

It was preparation.

God humbled Israel so they would learn complete dependence upon Him, and I believe He lovingly does the same for us today.

The greatest danger is not hardship.

The greatest danger is forgetting the One who brought us through it.

When success comes, when prayers are answered, when the promises begin to unfold, may we never believe that our own strength accomplished what only God could do.

As Deuteronomy reminds us:

"Remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth..."

That verse changed the way I see everything.

The gifts.

The opportunities.

The influence.

The provision.

None of it begins with me.

It all begins with Him.

My prayer is that I never forget the God who rescued me, restored me, and reminded me who I truly am.
