The Power of Your Words

Welcome to Pray! you whore, a blog that shares my personal journey of repentance, reconciliation, and redemption.

One of the greatest lessons God has been teaching me is that our words carry tremendous power. What we allow to come out of our mouths can lead toward life or toward death, toward truth or toward deception.

God has given us the freedom to choose.

He has also given us His Word to guide those choices.

Joshua 1:8 reminds us:

"Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful."

Notice what God instructs Joshua to do.

Speak His Word.

Meditate on it.

Live it.

Day and night.

For someone like me, who once called herself a Christian but had never read the Bible from beginning to end, this verse completely transformed my perspective.

I realized that I had been searching everywhere else for wisdom while neglecting the very source God had already provided.

For many years, I looked to people for answers.

I sought advice from friends, mentors, leaders, and anyone I believed had more wisdom than I did.

Yet I rarely experienced the peace I was searching for.

Looking back, I wonder how different my life might have been if I had turned to God's Word first.

Imagine what our lives would look like if every opinion, every piece of advice, and every decision were first measured against Scripture.

That does not diminish the value of wise counselors, parents, pastors, or mentors. God often uses people to guide us. But every voice should ultimately be tested against the truth of His Word.

One passage that continually reminds me of this is James 3.

James compares the tongue to the bit in a horse's mouth and the rudder on a ship.

Though both are small, they determine the direction of something much larger.

He also reminds us that the tongue has the power to bless or to wound.

To encourage or to destroy.

To worship God or to tear down people who are made in His image.

That passage challenged me deeply.

It reminded me that spiritual maturity is reflected not only in what we believe but also in how we speak.

Words reveal the condition of the heart.

This is one reason I have become increasingly mindful of my speech.

Profanity.

Gossip.

Complaining.

Negative self-talk.

Harsh criticism.

None of these reflect the character of Christ.

If our mouths are continually filled with bitterness, we should pause and allow God to examine our hearts.

James asks an important question:

"Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?"

The answer is obvious.

Neither should a heart transformed by Christ continually produce words that destroy rather than heal.

Our words matter because they shape both our lives and the lives of those around us.

That is why I want to become increasingly aware of what enters my heart and what comes out of my mouth.

What we consume influences what we speak.

What we meditate on eventually becomes the language of our lives.

James 3:17 describes the wisdom that comes from God:

"But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere."

That is the kind of wisdom I desire.

It is the kind of wisdom that produces peace instead of division.

Truth instead of confusion.

Healing instead of condemnation.

As I continue growing in Christ, I am reminded that identity is the foundation of everything.

Many of us spend years allowing the world to tell us who we are.

Our failures define us.

Our careers define us.

Our achievements define us.

Our wounds define us.

But God speaks a different identity over His children.

Isaiah 43:1 declares:

"Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are Mine."

What a beautiful promise.

Before we are anything else, we belong to God.

When we understand that truth, we begin speaking differently because we begin thinking differently.

Instead of speaking fear, we speak faith.

Instead of speaking defeat, we speak hope.

Instead of agreeing with shame, we agree with God's promises.

One lesson God has continually shown me is that our words either align with His truth or reinforce our fears.

That is why I want my speech to reflect the promises of Scripture rather than the lies of the enemy.

The Israelites are a powerful example of this principle.

Although God promised them the Promised Land, their continual complaining, unbelief, and fear kept them wandering in the wilderness far longer than necessary.

Their words revealed the condition of their hearts.

Reading their story has challenged me to ask myself:

Am I speaking faith?

Or am I speaking fear?

Exodus 16 reminds us that even when God's people complained, He remained faithful.

His mercy continued to pursue them despite their weakness.

That truth humbles me.

God always keeps His promises.

The question is whether I will honor Him with my own words as faithfully as He honors His.

My prayer is simple:

May my speech reflect my Savior.

May my words bring life.

May they encourage the weary.

May they point others toward Jesus.

Because every word I speak is an opportunity either to build God's Kingdom or to tear something down.

Today, I choose life.

Today, I choose truth.

Today, I choose to speak words that honor the One who first spoke life into me.
